Painting estimates.

A finish is only as clear as the scope behind it.

The scope behind the estimate

Painting estimating, with the detail in view.

Estimax helps painting contractors and builders organise surfaces, preparation and coating requirements before pricing a job. Our painting estimator reads plans alongside room finishes, elevations and specifications, separating new work from repainting. A quantity-only package can support your own rates; an agreed painting tender estimate can bring material and labour allowances together for tender review or budget planning.

What we measure

A scope you can
check, item by item.

Quantities follow the issued drawings and the package you engage us to assess. Select the relevant work, then agree the boundaries before measurement begins.

01

Interior finishes

Link each room's walls, ceiling and joinery interfaces to the finish schedule. Different sheen levels and substrate preparation stay on separate lines.

02

Exterior exposure

Read façade elevations with soffit, fascia and opening details. Separate rendered surfaces, timber and metal rather than treating an elevation as one coating type.

03

Protective coatings

Use the specified surface preparation and coating build-up as the pricing basis. Specialist coating requirements need defined specifications or supplier input.

What affects the cost

Same trade.
Different cost drivers.

The estimate needs a stated basis. These are the details we examine before treating two quantities as equivalent work.

01

Condition before colour

A sound new lining and a damaged existing wall can have similar areas but very different preparation allowances. Site information is needed to define repairs.

02

The coating specification

Substrate, sheen, coat count and a specified protective system influence both material usage and application operations.

03

Reach and repetition

High walls, narrow access, detailed trim and small work zones can change productivity. Broad repetitive surfaces are identified separately.

Quantity take-off

Measure the work.
Explain the basis.

Painting quantity takeoff starts with a checked drawing scale and a room or elevation reference. We measure wall and ceiling areas in m², identify opening deductions, count doors and record trim lengths separately. Paint quantities in litres depend on the selected product's coverage, number of coats and an agreed allowance for application losses. A floor area alone is not a painting quantity.

Material scheduling

What goes into the package.

Primers, sealers, undercoats and finish coats are scheduled against their substrates. Protective and specialty coatings remain separate from decorative paints. Where included, masking, abrasives, fillers and sealants are identified as preparation consumables rather than hidden in finish quantities.

Labour & installation

How the work gets built.

Cutting in, occupied rooms, ceiling heights and repeated colour changes affect application time. Repainting can require cleaning, scraping, sanding and patching before the first coat. We distinguish these activities from new-surface painting and record access equipment, staged handovers and working-hour assumptions.

Before you send the drawings

Your painting
estimating questions.

Can a painting estimate cover a repaint?

Yes. Provide photographs, access information and a description of existing finishes. Hidden damage and uncertain preparation are recorded as assumptions or items needing confirmation.

Does a painting drawing takeoff include paint litres?

It can, where the coating products, coverage and coat counts are defined. Surface measurements and product quantities are kept distinct so the calculation can be reviewed.

Can I use my own painting rates?

Yes. Confirm that you need a quantity takeoff, or provide your rates for an agreed priced package. The scope and reporting format are settled before work begins.

Why Estimax

Construction understanding.
Useful estimating detail.

For painting, the value is in connecting the quantities to the actual work. We keep the documented scope, measurement basis and outstanding questions available for review.

01

Read across the documents

Review plans, schedules and details together. Keep drawing references with the quantities and raise conflicting information.

02

Show what the price includes

Separate measured work, agreed allowances and exclusions so you can assess the basis behind the estimate.

03

Keep the next step clear

Agree the deliverables, communicate scope questions and issue documentation structured for your tender or procurement review.
